NYSUT President Reportedly Urging Parents To Boycott Common Core Exams
NEW YORK (cbsnewyork) - A slate of education reforms were part of the state budget passed in Albany, New York, this week, but teachers are not happy with the results.
As WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported, it's a bitter battle over teacher evaluations. The head of the state's teachers' union has reportedly said she will urge parents to have their children opt out of the Common Core exams.
New York State United Teachers President Karen Magee said the tests are not a valid assessment of student performance.
"Brothers and sisters, we didn't start this war, but with your help, we will end it," Magee said in a video on NYSUT's website.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo wanted 50 percent of a teacher's evaluation tied to test results. According to the new state budget, the state education department will determine the percentage.
Outside evaluators will join principals in reviewing teachers.
Dismissal proceedings could begin after two consecutive, ineffective ratings and it will now take four years, not three, to be eligible for tenure.
The governor wants more accountability, but the teacher's union calls it a disgrace.
