Financial Expert: Make Saving A Priority

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- April is Financial Literacy Month, and studies are painting a harsh picture about how poorly educated people are when it comes to managing their money.

According one 2014 study, only two of every five Americans are focused to living within a budget.

"It's funny. We're all eating blueberries, almonds and chia seeds," Lance Drucker, CEO and president of Drucker Wealth Management, told CBS2's Diane Macedo. "We're going to cross fit. We're doing mud runs. So we plan on living longer and better. But I think the biggest problem is we're not saving enough and we're not investing enough."

Drucker said too many people worry about stocks and taxes -- which they have little control over -- while they're not worried enough about spending and savings, things they can control.

"Most people, when they get a paycheck, they pay their bills, they go out to dinner," he said. "Whatever's left is what they save. We need to turn that around. We need to start saving 15 to 25 percent pre-tax, and then we live on the rest, even if it means eating a can of tuna fish at the end of the month."
