Board Votes To Clean Up Unsightly Deer Park Property At Owner's Expense

DEER PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Some Long Island residents are applauding their local lawmakers for voting to clean up a Deer Park home that many call an eyesore.

Neighbors told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall they've seen raccoons, possums and mice going in and out of the Osceola Avenue home. Inside the two-story house are rotten food and stacks of old magazines and newspapers, neighbors said. A pile of garbage and many dead plants can be seen outside.

The house has not had running water or heat for a decade.

Town Board Votes To Clean Up Unsightly Deer Park House

"I've never seen raccoons until I came over here, and this is definitely dragging the neighborhood down a little," said a resident who built a home a few doors down.

The Babylon Town Board voted Tuesday to clean up the property at the owner's expense.

Residents said they can't wait to have it fixed up.

"To have a house boarded up like this is devastating to our economy of our homes," a neighbor said. "Many people have told me they're having problems selling because of the state of this house."

The homeowner's attorney told Newsday the town did not properly notify the owner.
