L Train Suspended Between Brooklyn-Manhattan For Weekend Maintenance

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Bad news for L train riders.

There's no service on the L train this weekend or for the next four weekends for that matter.

Service is suspended for maintenance work from the 14th Street-Eighth Avenue station in Manhattan to Lorimer Street in Brooklyn.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said he understands it's a big inconvenience for those riding the L train on weekends, but that the suspension is part of a much bigger problem, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

"If we had the kind of federal investment we should have in mass transit, we could actually fix the problems on the L train for the long run and not have to constantly be patching up," the mayor said. "Let's face it a lot of what ends up happening with the MTA is patching up a problem and they have to come back and patch it up again."

De Blasio said the MTA is $15 billion in debt.

"And the federal government is not putting any additional dollars into infrastructure. Washington has been keeping the infrastructure spending exactly the same for 12 years," he said. "It hasn't moved off a dime in 12 years. The exact same amount. That means we're falling backwards."

Trains won't start running again until 5 a.m. Monday.
