Family Concerned After Long Island Mother, Daughter Missing For Nearly 3 Weeks

GREENPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A family is frantically searching for a mother and daughter from Long Island missing for nearly 3 weeks.

As CBS2's Matt Kozar reported, the Costello home in Greenport is a sprawling piece of property. A man who would not identify himself said the family wouldn't comment on the disappearance of Iona Costello and her 14-year-old daughter Emily.

Southold's police chief said they were last seen on March 30 when a security camera recorded the mother and daughter leaving a Times Square parking garage.

Relatives said Iona planned to take her daughter to a show. But on April 4, Emily didn't show up to school following spring break.

A day later, family members filed a missing persons report.

Police said they've been unable to ping their cellphones.

The Costello family is well known in Greenport, where they own a marine contracting business. They also own a farm with horses and other animals.

A relative told Kozar that Iona had family troubles. She said Iona's husband George died two years ago and children from a previous marriage were contesting his will. The case has been tied up in the courts for two years, Kozar reported.

Iona's sister-in-law, Mary Costello, set up a Facebook page, which has been shared more than 1,000 times.

One woman wrote "My thoughts and prayers go out to you both. I cannot ever put myself in that position."

Another person said "Praying that they are found and are safe."

Prayers for a mother and daughter missing for nearly three weeks.
