Power Outage Hits Spring Creek Towers In Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A power outage is impacting Spring Creek Towers, formerly known as Starrett City.

The outage began at around 9 a.m. Monday morning. Power was restored before 12:30 p.m., but elevator service was still shut down, 1010 WINS reported.

Spring Creek Towers comprises 46 buildings and 5,881 residential units. Some 15,000 people live there.

"I just stepped into the elevator, and as soon as I stepped into the elevator, the power went out," resident Danielle Jones told CBS2's Dave Carlin. "I'm on the 13th floor, so I was stuck between 13 and 12, and I was there for about 45 minutes."

Jones was trapped alone and in the dark in the elevator with a piercing alarm going off.

"The Fire Department finally came. People were saying 'Hello,' to see if anyone was stuck in the elevator. And I was screaming back, 'Hello, hello, hello,'" Jones said. "They came and pried the doors open and lifted me up from my shoulders and pulled me out."

Firefighters escorted Jones down 12 flights of stairs.

Residents told 1010 WINS' Derricke Dennis this was the third power outage in the last five months.

"We're getting used to it, after 35 years that I've been here," one resident said.

The building complex generates its own power from its own power plant instead of getting it from Con Edison.

"It's too many times. It shouldn't be doing this. They should know better," resident Marilyn Chase. "But, hey, like I said, what can you do?"

The cause is under investigation, but 71-year-old Jerry Yerkins said when it rains, it pours and the electricity goes.

"The generators, they short out. Today I heard there was an explosion by one of the generators," he said.
