NYCLU: E-ZPass Readers Gathering Info Far Away From Toll Plazas

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The New York Civil Liberties Union is alerting drivers that the E-ZPass tags on their windshields are being used for more than just tolls.

The group released a map Wednesday pinpointing 149 locations in the five boroughs where E-ZPass is used for traffic management, WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported.

In some areas of Midtown Manhattan, the readers are at nearly every intersection.

"Those people didn't really know that their E-ZPass tags were being scanned in this way," said Mariko Hirose, staff attorney for the NYCLU.

Hirose said the group fears privacy policies are lax or nonexistent and wants "to make sure that the data is not going to be used for something else."

The city's Department of Transportation said the information is only used to monitor traffic, and the data do not have identifying information for individual E-ZPass users.
