NYC Food Truck Lunch: The Nassau Snacker From Mamas Heros

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

A new food truck with the apostrophe-challenged name of Mamas Heros just hit the street, and we happened to find them on their first day out. That meant a little disorganization, but nothing crazy in terms of waits, only about 5 minutes.

The menu is deli-centric, with sandwiches coming in 6-inch and 12-inch sizes, and prices ranging from $6-$12 for different combinations, or $13 for a 12-inch build-your-own hero.

We ordered a 6-inch sandwich called the Nassau Snacker for $7, plus an order of onion rings for $4. Either they were trying to impress people on their first day, or somebody needed a ruler, because our 6-inch hero was just under 10 inches.

The Nassau Snacker said it included turkey, bologna, salami, lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard and your choice of cheese. There were six choices for cheese, and we opted for cheddar. We also asked for pickles and cucumbers to be added to the hero.

As for the bread, the choices were ciabatta, Italian bread with or without sesame seeds, whole wheat and panini.

Like we said, the hero was much larger than expected. The bologna and turkey were fine, but we could not find any salami in there. Also, once we asked for pickles and cucumbers to be added, they must have thought that's all we wanted, because the lettuce and tomato were also non-existent. Guess we should have asked for all the toppings we wanted instead of just additions to the sandwich listed on the menu. That type of thing happens on a first day, but hopefully will get fixed with some experience.

One thing that was inexcusable, however, was cellophane still on the bologna. There's nothing like taking a big bite of a hero and having to pull a string of cellophane out of your mouth. Not a pleasant task.

Speaking of not good, the onion rings were terrible. It was $4 for an order of the same minced onion rings you get in the freezer section of your supermarket, and they weren't even hot, just barely warm.

Our lunch from Mamas Heros definitely had the first-day blues. Some things, like what was included on the sandwich and the cellophane on the bologna, should get better over time (or after they read this review). Other things, like the onion rings, need to change. For $4, we expect much better onion rings.

While we don't foresee Mamas Heros winning any Vendy Awards, we would try their heros again. You can get this food at any deli, but there's something enjoyable about ordering and eating outside on a nice, sunny day.

You can find Mamas Heros on Twitter here, but their Facebook page is empty, and their website is still just a Go Daddy splash page.
