CBS2 Exclusive: Couple Speaks Out After Bronxville Break-In

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Homeowners in Bronxville were on high alert Sunday after brazen break-in that took place on Saturday night.

As CBS2's Valerie Castro reported, many said they would take extra precautions until police track down the suspects.

"When I first saw two men in my bedroom, that felt like being in a movie, and very surreal, and very scary," Jennifer Shively said.

Shively and her husband George were asleep in their Summit Ave. home when a noise inside their bedroom woke them up.

"They woke me up with a flashlight in the face, get out of bed, get up, get down on the floor. Didn't get down on the floor. That's when," George said, as he motioned to his head.

Shively was hit in the head by one of the suspects. The couple then decided the best thing to do was to comply with their demands.

"I got very focused on accomplishing what they wanted. They wanted money and they wanted jewelry," Jennifer said.

"We gave them my wife's wedding ring from her hand, which was the most valuable and sentimental value," George said.

Bronxville Police spent the afternoon interviewing the family who said the suspects got in through a second floor window.

The home has an alarm system, but it was turned off while their son was out.

Police believe the robbery is connected to a previous burglary on May 10 on nearby Governor's Road. The Governor's Road house was unoccupied, but the burglars used the same method of second-floor entry, tripping the alarm, police said.

A neighbor said the recent break-ins mean a change in habits for everyone, like locking windows and doors even when they're home.

"That's the sort of scary thing. Now I think we're going to have start doing that, and that is unfortunate because it takes away from some of the character of this community," William Gay said.

The Shivelys are grateful that they weren't seriously hurt, but said the experience has changed their lives.

"I feel very blessed that we're okay and you know, it's just, it was too bad that it happened, very unfortunate," Jennifer said.

Police were still looking for suspects on Sunday. They have asked residents on surrounding streets who might have surveillance cameras on the outside of their homes to check the video for anything suspicious.
