City To Spend $242M More To Repave Roads In All 5 Boroughs After Harsh Winter

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The city is making a large commitment to smoothing out streets after a harsh winter.

Mayor Bill de Blasio donned a hard hat and helped lay asphalt on a stretch of Tysens Lane in New Dorp, Staten Island, WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

His administration plans to spend $242 million more for road repaving in all five boroughs over the next two years.

"So what does that mean? Well, it means enough to resurface 2,500 lane miles," de Blasio said.

A very harsh winter left New York City roads in terrible shape, but the mayor also pointed out the neglect of previous administrations.

Irene, a Staten Island resident, says the potholes on her street were awful.

"It was bad, very bad," she said. "You could break your leg if you fell into it."

The DOT says it has filled 327,000 potholes since mid-December.
