Experimental Teaching Program Expanding To 64 More NYC Schools

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is announcing the expansion of an experimental teaching program.

It's called "Progressive Redesign Opportunity Schools for Excellence," or PROSE.

The program consists of a small group of schools that can work outside certain city and union classroom regulations. That's meant to encourage innovation to produce strategies that can help students citywide.

De Blasio said the program gives schools more options and flexibility.

"Longer school hours, weekend sessions with students or for additional teacher training and preparation, more one-on-one time between teachers and students," the mayor said.

Two schools on Staten Island will be among 64 new PROSE schools next fall, de Blasio announced Tuesday. There have not been any on Staten Island until now.

"I think this model is a great model for building out rapidly, and it is done on a cooperative basis," de Blasio said.

There are currently 62 PROSE schools in New York City. City officials want to eventually have 200 schools in the program.

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña said so far the response has been good.

"Parents came to an extremely well-attended parent meeting about the PROSE, and they were very enthusiastic," Fariña said.

The teachers union is also calling this a win-win.
