Girl, 2, Falls From Third-Story Window In Borough Park, Brooklyn

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A toddler was rushed to an area hospital Wednesday evening, after falling from a third-story window in Borough Park, Brooklyn.

As CBS2's Tony Aiello reported, 2-year-old Nyjeana Civil fell from the window at 902 44th St. around 5 p.m.

Cellphone video shows FDNY first responders stabilizing and comforting the little girl, strapping her to a board and carrying her to the corner before loading her into a waiting ambulance.

"The mother was just hysterically crying and yelling," said neighbor Xavier Corchado.

The child was taken to Lutheran Medical Center in serious, but stable, condition, the FDNY said. She suffered head and neck injuries, and was alert and conscious, police said.

The window the girl fell from has a guard on it and even a screen in place, but there appears to be a hole in it and somehow the child fell approximately 30 feet to the red brick sidewalk below, Aiello reported.

One witness said the girl may have thrown something out of the window a few minutes before tumbling out herself.

"I don't know what happened. I was at the hospital to see her, but she's on the machine. She don't move," said the victim's aunt Leah Fetuse.

New York City Codes Enforcement officers were at the scene Wednesday night.

Neighbors can only speculate how such a tragic accident could have occurred with what looks like safeguards in place.

"It is strange, but everything happens -- everything happens and we don't know why, but things happened, it occurs," said neighbor Seleny Pena.

Neighbor Rebecca told 1010 WINS she saw the little girl on the side walk.

"I'm just praying for the little girl. I hope for her and her family that everything's OK. You know, she's just a baby," she said.

Police are investigating but don't suspect any criminality at this time. They said the girl's mother was home at the time.
