Clouds Get In Way Of Manhattanhenge, But Light Show Is Still Spectacular

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Crowds gathered Friday evening to look at the setting sun, for what has become known as Manhattanhenge.

As CBS2's Matt Kozar reported, the light show has developed such a following that it has upstaged all the electricity of Times Square.

Armed with cameras and smartphones, New Yorkers and tourists alike risked their lives in busy 42nd Street traffic to get a shot of Manhattanhenge – when the sunset aligns perfectly with New York City's east-west streets.

"It's something that doesn't happen all the time," said Chris Williams.

"I love taking geometric pictures and stuff, and it fits perfectly," said Ben Dunn. "It goes right in the center."

But this highly-anticipated phenomenon was a geometric bust. The clouds obscured the glowing sphere.

Still, it was a striking sunset.

"It's just having the sunset straight down streets," said Lewis Scattareggi. "It's a beautiful view."

And for the briefest of moments, it forced even the busiest of us to stop, look up, smile, and admire what we often ignore. Some even took selfies with their friends, or in Kozar's case, cameramen.

Even Maurice DuBois snapped a photo outside the CBS Broadcast Center at 524 W. 57th St.

If you missed Manhattanhenge Friday night, there will be another opportunity Saturday night. If you miss that, the next opportunity won't be until July.
