Learning Through Interaction At The World Science Festival In NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Hundreds of families spent their day at Washington Square Park, where kids got a one-of-a-kind look at science through the World Science Festival.

As TV 10/55's Ilana Gold reported, Washington Square Park transformed into an outdoor science lab on Sunday. The park was packed full of hands-on activities for the ultimate science street fair.

"It's really cool. It's really interesting," said Jeanna Diamond, of the Upper West Side.

Kids got to watch experiments first hand and saw how the school subject applies to everyday life, like momentum, generating energy and how elements and gasses work.

"(How does this change your opinion of science?) It shows me different ways I can learn about it," said Diamond.

And learning is all about interaction. Some even got to experience what zero gravity feels like.

"(How much fun was that?) A lot. (What was it like to fly up there?) It was like being on the moon," said Paul Nieuwerburgh, of Greenwich Village.

A major emphasis of Sunday's event was space. Kids actually got the chance to talk to astronauts and scientists from NASA, Gold reported.

"Showing them about science and space, the fact that they can be part of it, it's their future," said Tara Ruttley, NASA scientist.

One mobile exhibit from Houston, Texas simulates the International Space Station and explains its research.

"It's important; it's the way we inspire them in their studies of science and engineering," said NASA scientist Dr. Camille Alleyne.

This year marks the 7th annual World Science Festival in New York City. Since it started in 2008, the event has brought in more than 1 million visitors.
