Newark To Launch ID Card Program This Summer
NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Following in New York City's footsteps, Newark is starting its own municipal identification card program for most city residents, including those who are living in the country illegally.
Mayor Ras Baraka signed the legislation Monday.
The ID cards will be made available to all Newark residents over the age of 14.
According to advocates, the cards will provide access to vital city services and be especially useful for people they described as marginalized in the community,'' including those with disabilities, the homeless and people with criminal records.
Officials said the cards will serve as proof of identity and residency, regardless of immigration status.
A pilot program will start on July 1 and the cards will be available citywide on Aug. 1
It is believed to be the first time a municipality in New Jersey has created its own ID cards program.
