Yankees Designate For Assignment Struggling Reliever Carpenter
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The David Carpenter era in the Bronx is over.
When the Yankees acquired the hard-throwing right-hander from the Atlanta Braves over the winter, they envisioned a bridge to their exceptional late-inning tandem of Dellin Betances and closer Andrew Miller.
But despite throwing a fastball that routinely topped 95 mph, Carpenter never seemed to get on track, going 0-1 with a 4.82 ERA in 22 appearances, and as a result was designated for assignment on Wednesday.
Masahiro Tanaka, recently recovered from arm injuries, took Carpenter's spot on the roster.
Along with lefty Chasen Shreve, Carpenter, 29, was acquired on Jan. 1 from Atlanta for left-hander Manny Banuelos.
Carpenter, who has pitched for four major league teams in six years, is 11-11 with a 3.73 ERA in 210 career appearances.
