Rye Native Killed In South Africa Lion Attack Laid To Rest

RYE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Friends and family said a final farewell Saturday to the Westchester County woman killed by a lion in South Africa.

Katherine Chappell, 29, died Monday when a lion approached her vehicle on a safari outside Johannesburg and attacked her through an open window.

The windows of her vehicle were apparently down when the lion attacked, despite signs warning visitors to "Keep Windows Closed At All Times" at the popular lion park.

Chappell was in South Africa on a volunteer mission for a wildlife protection group.

A well-regarded video editor for movies and television, Chappell won an Emmy Award last year for her work on "Game of Thrones."

She studied film at Hofstra University and moved to Vancouver to do visual effects, working on big budget productions, including the HBO series "Game of Thrones" and the movies "Captain America," "Divergent" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," WCBS 880's Sean Adams reported.

Chappell's funeral was held at Graham's Funeral Home in Rye, where she grew up.
