Rainy Weather Means More Mosquitoes Taking A Bite Out Of Your Weekend Plans

PARAMUS, N.J.(CBSNewYork) -- It's time for mosquito spray and long sleeves and pants, an explosion is expected in North Jersey.

Things are already bad if you're standing by standing water, but over the weekend, mosquitoes may take a big bite out of your plans.

"We've got mosquitoes now. This weekend will be hatching out," Peter Rendine, Chief Inspector, Bergen County Mosquito Control, said.

Rendine told CBS2's Vanessa Murdock that adult mosquitoes will be on the prowl for blood and that rain is to blame.

He also said that crews are accustomed to making house calls.

"They're all over the place," Closter resident Brian Lawrence said.

In the past swamps weren't a problem. Now, it's double duty. Crews use sprays and even fish to swallow larvae in seconds. The goal is to stop the blood suckers before they bite.

"This weekend is going to be bad nuisance wise. Nuisance wise you're going to have to take precautions," Rendine said.

If you have young children it's always best to speak with your pediatrician about which bug repellent makes the most sense.

To best protect yourself, wear a mosquito repellant with DEET, and wear long pants, and sleeves.

Emptying old tires, cleaning out bird feeders, and turning over trashcans can deny the pests the water they need to breed.

Without water they're dead. Unfortunately, not in time for the weekend.

The state of New Jersey just started testing for West Nile Virus this week, no cases have been reported.

It's still early in the season for mosquitoes to carry disease.
