Report: Struggling Mets To Call Up Top Prospect Steven Matz
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- He won't help the struggling offense, but he should fortify the Mets' strong starting rotation.
According to Fox Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are set to call up left-handed pitcher Steven Matz.
Matz is the Mets' top-rated prospect, according to MLB.com.
The 24-year-old Long Island native might replace fellow left-handed starter Jon Niese, or New York could once again use a six-man rotation.
In addition to Niese, New York's rotation includes co-aces Matt Harvey and Jacob deGrom, rookie Noah Syndergaard and veteran Bartolo Colon.
Matz, who was born in Stony Brook and attended Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, has pitched brilliantly for Triple-A Las Vegas this season.
The former second-round pick has gone 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. In 90 1/3 innings pitched he's struck out 94 and walked 31.
For what it's worth, he's also batting .304.
