Reports: JPP's Fingers Intact After Fireworks Accident; Giants Withdraw Offer

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- It could have been much worse for Jason Pierre-Paul.

The New York Giants defensive end suffered "severe burns" to his palm and fingers in a fireworks accident on the Fourth of July, ESPN reported. Pierre-Paul was being treated at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., CBS2 sources confirmed on Sunday.

JPP's fingers are intact despite early reports to the contrary, according to ESPN. He underwent tests on one finger for nerve damage, "and doctors believe there will be no permanent damage or disfigurement of his hands," the network reported.

The Giants have withdrawn a long-term contract offer worth $60 million, which Pierre-Paul was likely to turn down, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. A team spokesperson told Rapoport that the "first concern is for JPP's well-being."

Images circulated on Twitter over the weekend of a U-Haul truck loaded with fireworks reportedly belonging to the two-time Pro Bowler. On Instagram, Pierre-Paul sang about "fireworks on the ground" while holding his son, with a U-Haul behind them.

It's unclear whether Pierre-Paul is in danger of missing all or part of the 2015 season with training camp set to begin in late July. Several reporters tweeted on Sunday that the injury isn't believed to be career-threatening.

There's been no word from the Giants, who have been waiting for the 26-year-old to sign his $14.8-million tender. JPP, seeking a new long-term deal, would become an unrestricted free agent if the team revokes his franchise tag. He had 12.5 sacks last season.
