Police: Church, 2 Schools In Teaneck Hit In Attempted Burglaries

TEANECK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police in Teaneck, New Jersey were searching Monday for whoever was behind the burglary attempts at a church and two schools this past weekend.

Police received a call at 9:48 p.m. Sunday about burglary at St. Anastasia's Roman Catholic Church, at 1095 Teaneck Rd. in Teaneck. The priest at the church said he saw the suspect inside the premises and confronted him, at which point the suspect ran off, police said.

The priest was not injured, and it was not known what if anything was taken from the church, police said.

While investigating the church burglary, police also received a call of a burglar alarm going off at 10 p.m. Sunday at the Community High School, at 1135 Teaneck Rd. Responding officers saw that someone had broken a classroom window, but an investigation concluded that the suspect did not get inside, police said.

At 10:04 p.m. Sunday, police received a call about a burglar arm going off at the Community School at 11 W. Forest Ave., police said. Responding officers from the Teaneck and Bergenfield police departments concluded that someone had gotten inside the school, but nothing was taken, police said.

The suspect in the church incident was described as a young black male standing 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds, and wearing white shorts, a dark colored shirt, and a baseball cap.

The investigation continued Monday night.
