Deadline Passes Without New Deal For Giants' Pierre-Paul

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul did not get a new long-term contract deal from the New York Giants ahead of a deadline for players who have franchise tags, a person close to the negotiations told The Associated Press.

The lack of a deal by the Wednesday deadline is not surprising considering Pierre-Paul's status has been uncertain since he was hurt in a fireworks accident July 4. ESPN reported last week that Pierre-Paul's right index ringer was amputated.

The person spoke Wednesday on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to discuss Pierre Paul's contract situation. The person says the team has not rescinded its $14.8 million franchise tag offer.

If the Giants rescind the contract tender offer, the 26-year-old would become an unrestricted free agent.

The Giants reportedly pulled a $60 million offer off the table following the accident. Four franchise-tagged players signed new deals with their respective teams on Wednesday, according to the New York Daily News.

Pierre-Paul's agent, Eugene Parker, has not responded to several requests for comment.

Pierre-Paul broke out in 2011, posting 16 1/2 sacks and playing a key role in the Giants winning the Super Bowl.

Pierre-Paul has 42 career sacks, including 12 1/2 last season.
