Police Release Surveillance Video Of Suspect In UWS Diner Shooting

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A man suffered a graze wound to his head Thursday morning when he was shot point-blank at an Upper West Side diner, police said.

It happened around 3:45 a.m. at City Diner on West 90th Street and Broadway.

Surveillance video shows a man entering the diner and approaching the victim. Then he returned a short time later and fired at least one shot.

"The guy fell on the table. We thought he's dead," Chima Nwama, a diner employee, told CBS2's Janelle Burrell.

The 24-year-old victim drove himself to Mount Sinai Hospital. He is in stable condition. The victim was undergoing surgery Thursday and is expected to survive, Burrell reported.

As CBS2's Janelle Burrell reported, authorities said this was no random shooting.

Police believe the shooter and the victim, who was sitting with a woman in a booth, knew each other, exchanging words before the shooting.

"They knew each other," Head Chef Kostas Garidas told WCBS 880's Marla Diamond. "They give a hug to each other."

Detectives were on the scene all day Thursday, fingerprinting employees as they tried to isolate handprints of the gunman hoping that evidence and surveillance video will lead to an arrest.

Detectives say the victim is not cooperating in helping to identify the suspect.

There were several people inside the diner at the time. They scattered when the gunman opened fire. No one else was injured.

The diner reopened for breakfast as detectives continued their investigation both inside the restaurant and on the street.

The victim had surgery and is in stable condition.
