ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A toddler was struck and killed by a mail truck in an accident that left her older brother and grandmother injured Monday morning in New Jersey, police said.

It happened just after 10 a.m. at Rahway Avenue and Chilton Street in Elizabeth.

The grandmother was crossing the street with her 3-year-old granddaughter in her arms and her 4-year-old grandson by her side when the U.S. postal truck turned the corner and hit them, 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet reported.

A witness, named Andres, said the girl was thrown from her grandmother's arms by the impact.

"The baby came out flying. They hit the floor," Andres said. "You never expect to see something like that."

The girl was pronounced dead at Trinitas Hospital, police told WCBS 880.

The boy and his grandmother were taken to University Hospital. The child was in stable condition and the woman suffered serious injuries, police said. Both are expected to survive.

The truck driver was not injured and is cooperating with the investigation, police said.

CBS2 initially reported that the truck and a motorcycle collided before the pedestrians were hit.
