NYPD: Suspect Who Escaped Police Custody In Harlem Faces More Charges

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An attempted murder suspect is back in police custody after being on the run for nearly a month.

With his hands and feet shackled, 23-year-old Tareek Arnold was escorted out of the 32nd Precinct in Harlem on Tuesday by the same detectives who lost him four weeks ago, CBS2's Steve Langford reported.

On June 23, Arnold was being taken from the same station house to Central Booking when he shoved a police officer to the pavement and took off while still in handcuffs, CBS2 reported.

Surveillance video of the incident showed Arnold running from the two detectives on West 135th Street near Frederick Douglass Boulevard, CBS2 reported.

Arnold's getaway sparked an intense manhunt, police locking down much of the neighborhood that night.

On Monday night, police found Arnold hiding in an apartment in a building at 139th Street and Fifth Avenue, a short walk from where he escaped, Langford reported. Police say they don't think he ever left the city and that he had been jumping from apartment to apartment during his time on the run, CBS2 reported.

One neighbor, who did not want to give her name, was shocked to hear that Arnold was hiding out in an apartment beside hers.

"I heard this noise and I said who's that, and I saw men out here," she said.

Arnold was in the wind after being charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a man in the same neighborhood. After his run from custody a woman who lived with him defended the suspect in an interview with CBS2's Janelle Burrell.

"He's not a bad person at all, he just live in a bad neighborhood. He's a good kid," she said.

Arnold faces arraignment in Manhattan Criminal Court on new charges of assault on a police officer and escape.

Arnold had originally been picked up by police on attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting of a man on June 8.

Sources told CBS2 that Arnold was alone when police caught him. They moved in after receiving a tip telling them where he would be.
