Prosecutors: Westbury Man Beat Pomeranian 'Mercilessly' To Death

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Long Island man is accused of beating his dog to death.

Authorities allege Bing Jie Yang, 23, beat the 2-year-old Pomeranian because it went to the bathroom in his Westbury home, WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported.

The little dog, named Dan Dan, suffered tremendously before he died, authorities said.

"This defendant allegedly beat his small Pomeranian so mercilessly that he broke the small dog's ribs, fractured his liver, and ultimately killed him," Acting Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas said.

"I've been doing this for over 30 years and every time one of these cases come along, I just shake my head," Nassau County SPCA Chief Gary Rogers told Hall. "I can't believe people are continually doing this to voiceless, helpless animals."

Yang faces one felony and one misdemeanor animal cruelty charge.

The Chinese national was ordered to surrender his passport and is due back in court on July 29.

He faces two years in prison if convicted of the top charge.
