Thousands Still Without Power Following Severe Storm On Long Island

SETAUKET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Several days after a severe storm knocked out power to tens of thousands on Long Island, more than a thousand customers are still waiting for the lights to come back on.

At the height of the outage on Tuesday morning, more than 80,000 homes and businesses were affected, WCBS 880's Mike Xirinachs reported.

But as of 7:15 p.m. Thursday, 1,151 customers still remained in the dark.

"People are really struggling," said Nancy.

PSEG Long Island said every customer who remains with an active outage has had a crew assigned and should have power restored by Thursday night.

The utility said it has restored power to more than 98 percent of those impacted, 95 percent of which were restored within the first 48 hours.

Nancy and her neighbors said the next time this happens, a little more help at intersections and traffic signals would be welcomed.

"I wish there was more cops though at the lights, traffic lights. That would be a good thing," she said. "A lot of confusion, people can get into car accidents."
