Target To Remove Gender-Based Signs From Stores

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Expect More. Pay Less. Ignore Gender?

Target Corporation is moving away from gender-based signs in its stores.

The mega retailer made the announcement on its blog Friday.

"We never want guests or their families to feel frustrated or limited by the way things are presented. Over the past year, guests have raised important questions about a handful of signs in our stores that offer product suggestions based on gender," Target said. "We know that shopping preferences and needs change and, as guests have pointed out, in some departments like Toys, Home or Entertainment, suggesting products by gender is unnecessary."

According to the statement, signs in the childrens' bedding area will no longer feature suggestions for boys or girls. It will simply say "kids."

In the toys aisles, stores will no longer use pink, blue, yellow or green paper on the back walls of shelves, and there will be no reference to gender.

The changes will take effect within the next few months.
