CBS2 Demands Answers: Brooklyn Residents Say Late Night Drumming Is A Noisy Nuisance

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Imagine the sound of drums blasting into your home while you try to sleep. That's the reality for some Brooklyn residents who said their complaints to the city have fallen on deaf ears.

As CBS2's Hazel Sanchez reported, Sunday afternoon in Prospect Park's 'Drummer's Grove' is a crowd pleaser.

Travis Pratt plays his drums there every weekend and he's far from alone.

"At least 400 people are drumming, 400 drummers come out here every Sunday," Pratt said.

The group's permit said they must stop playing at 7 and have the space cleared by 8 p.m., but neighbors across the street on Ocean Ave said it's not happening. Video showed the group still going strong around 9:30 on Sunday night.

"That needs to be in a carnival, not a residential setting," Resia Leger said.

"You got people with whistles, you have people with horns, tambourines, they're dancing out there. it's nice, but there should be a limit to it, that's all we're trying to say," Ronald Hicks said, "They're there until 10, 11, 12, 1 o'clock in the morning and there's no consequences."

The mother of one 3-year-old asked not be identified.

Over the last 2 years she has filed multiple after hours drumming complaints with 311, the police, and the parks department, but said nothing has been done.

"It's as if I have an entire apartment filled with drummers in my house," she said.

The grove is just a short walk from her home.

"I'm not here to stop the drummer's circle on Sundays, not at all. I would love to have some sort of regulation," she said.

"Some knuckle heads don't want to listen to the rules," Pratt acknowledged.

The parks department said they're looking into the complaints.

The Brooklyn Borough President's office said they are investigating the matter along with the Prospect Park Alliance, the 78th Precinct, and the drum group organizers.

The NYPD said they will be closely monitoring after hours drumming complaints in Prospect Park.
