NYC Food Truck Lunch: Al Pastor Tacos From Camion Modern Mexican

Perry, the founder of New York Street Food, brings you his latest review on New York City street food.

Camion has been around about a year, but its roots go back further than that. If you recognize one of the guys in the truck, it's because it's Mike from the old Mike & Willies food truck. Looks like Willie's not involved with Camion because the official name of the truck is Mike & Jen's Camion Modern Mexican. Food trucks are a tough business, and not for everyone.

The menu is not large, but what Camion does, they do well. Two tacos cost $8, but you can add a third taco for $3. They have fish tacos and cod fritters for seafood lovers, but that's what we got last time. This visit, we went for the Daily Special of two al pastor tacos. (Most of the tacos can be ordered as burritos, which also cost $8.)

We got our lunch, squeezed fresh lime on the tacos, and went to town. Each taco had two tortillas, which made it much easier to pick up. It also kept the tacos from breaking apart in the middle of a bite.

The shredded pork was slow-roasted, and topped with lots of pineapple, chopped red onions, fresh cilantro and a green creamy, herby sauce.

The pork was tasty, but be careful with all the juices dripping out the back of the taco. This can easily mess up your clothes before returning to work.

You could tell the pineapple was fresh because some of the pieces were soft and some were firm. The texture of canned pineapple is much more uniform.

One difference between this visit and our prior visit was that tacos came with a small portion of purple tortilla chips on the side. Now if you want chips, it costs $2 for a side order of chips & salsa.

We found Camion on Broadway between 55th & 56th St, but you can find their location on Twitter here, Facebook is here, and their website is here.
