Bryce Harper On Mets' Recent Play: 'I Really Don't Care'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Mets just keep on winning, and their lead in the National League East is growing.
With their victory over the Phillies on Wednesday night -- their sixth straight -- and the Nationals' loss to the Padres, New York now holds a 6 1/2-game lead over second-place Washington.
At the start of the season -- and up until about a month ago, when general manager Sandy Alderson started acquiring impact players -- the Nationals were the heavy favorites to win the NL East. But with time running out and the Mets continuing to roll right along, the Nats are in serious trouble.
"I really don't care," Nationals superstar right fielder Bryce Harper told The New York Times in regard to the Mets' recent winning streaks. "We've got to win games to stay with what we're doing. If we don't win, it really doesn't matter. We've just got to keep winning ballgames.
"If something happens and we don't make it, it's part of the game. We've just got to keep playing hard and play till the end."
The Mets still have six games remaining against the Nationals. The two clubs will play a three-game set at Nationals Park from Sept. 7-9, and then again in the final three games of the season at Citi Field from Oct. 2-4.
The Mets are hoping that the last series of the season -- which could end up being massively important -- won't have any bearing on the postseason. If New York continues to play the way it's playing, the division will be locked up well before October.
But there are still a lot of games to play and the Amazin's need to prove that they are, in fact, as good as their recent record indicates.
