Police: Connecticut Housekeeper Steals Nearly $400K In Jewelry From Client

WESTPORT, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Connecticut housekeeper who worked for a home for nearly two decades stole close to $400,000 worth of jewelry from her client, police said.

A Westport resident reported in May that large amounts of jewelry had been stolen from two safes, police said. Investigators later determined 35 pieces total had been stolen from the safes and elsewhere in the house.

The resident's longtime housekeeper, Martha Lopez, 57, of Norwalk, had used safe codes taken from the homeowner's day planner, police said.

Lopez pawned at least 20 pieces of the jewelry between July 2012 and December 2014, police said.

WVIT-TV reports Lopez was arraigned Tuesday and charged with larceny. She was unable to post a $150,000 bond and is due back in court on Oct. 5.
