NYPD: Man Charged After Shooting Himself In Groin On Brooklyn Street

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A Brooklyn man was arrested and charged after police said he shot himself in the groin on a street corner.

Police said the incident happened around 1:15 a.m. Saturday on the corner of Clarkson Avenue and East 93 Street in Brooklyn.

According to the NYPD, Javier Thomas was arrested on weapons possession and reckless endangerment charges.

Authorities said three officers had approached Thomas because he appeared to be urinating in the street.

As the officers approached, they heard a gunshot and found Thomas had shot himself in the groin, police said.

Officers found a loaded handgun under the passenger tire of a minivan nearby, police said. They allege Thomas tossed it under the car after the accidental shooting.

Police said it appeared Thomas had mishandled the weapon, causing it to fire.
