Evil Doesn't Stand A Chance Against Historical Society's 'Superheroes In Gotham' Exhibit

NEW YORK(CBSNewYork) -- Holy history Batman!

Those are the words the New York Historical Society hopes to hear you shouting as you walk through their newest exhibit, 'Superheroes In Gotham.'

As CBS2's Vanessa Murdock reported, evil has no chance against the superhero stacked walls of the historical society.

"They're everywhere, but they were born and raised in New York. I just think it's a surprise to many people," Curator of Decorative Arts, Debra Schmidt Bach said.

Bach said she hopes the exhibit sets the record straight while delighting the senses.

"I love the Batmobile," she said, "To bring that car here is very special."

One of the three original Batmobiles being brought to Gotham City, a thinly veiled New York City, is certainly a standout, but superhero disguises can't be ignored. From TV's Adventures of Superman, a costume dating back to the 1950s to an original Catwoman costume from the Batman television series.

No exhibit on superheroes would be complete without comics, that is the start of their story after all, and perhaps the most coveted editions are on display.

The first appearance issue of Superman, Action Comics' Number 1, goes back to June 1938.

"They love reading about heroes, super strength, and love, knowing evil can be addressed," Dr. Louise Mirrer, President and CEO, New York Historical Society, said.

The exhibit also explores current superhero comics based in New York. It opens to the public on Friday.
