Dole Vegetables Recalls Spinach Products Due To Possible Salmonella

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Dole Fresh Vegetables this week announced a recall of bagged spinach due to possible salmonella contamination.

The product under recall is Dole Spinach coded A27409B & A27409A, with an "enjoy by" date of Oct. 15 and UPC 7143000976, according to a news release.

It was distributed in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, as well as Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

No illnesses have been reported from the recalled spinach. The precautionary recall is under way because a sample of the product tested positive for salmonella in a random sample examination by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Only the specific product codes are affected, the release said.

Salmonella is one of the most common causes of foodborne illness, CBS News has reported. Eating food contaminated with the bacteria can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps and fever, with symptoms usually beginning within 12 to 72 hours after exposure.
