Woman Shot, Killed Near 2 Schools In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A woman was shot and killed just steps from two schools Thursday in the Allerton section of the Bronx.

As CBS2's Lou Young reported, a major police mobilization was under way following the shooting around 3 p.m. at 975 Waring Ave. -- off Colden Avenue and not far from Pelham Parkway – in the courtyard of the Pelham Parkway Houses public housing development.

A woman in her 20s was struck in the shooting, police said. She was pronounced dead at nearby Jacobi Medical Center, police said.

The crime scene is between Columbus High School and P.S. 89, and many parents use the pathway through the housing project to get between the two schools, Young reported.

Residents said the area is relatively safe, and told CBS2's Young they were shaken.

"I saw all the action out there and I was trying to park my car, and I started crying," one woman said. "I was asking the cops what happened, because I live here, and you know, my kids walk in and out. I walk in and out. I want to know what happened. It's very upsetting to be honest with you – very upsetting. I called my husband and I said somebody got shot."

Witnesses reported hearing four or five shots, and two men and a woman were seen speeding off in a marked panel truck – possibly with some sort of business marking on it.
