RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) — A Long Island woman has been arrested in connection with a series of thefts.

In the last several weeks, Riverhead police said they received numerous reports of pocketbooks and other items being stolen from unlocked cars at local vineyards, farm stands and parking lots.

Cheryl Gormez, 50, of Mattituck, was arrested Thursday and charged with criminal possession of stolen property and identity theft.

Police said she tried to use stolen credits at a gas station and was also caught with stolen jewelry.

Police are urging patrons not to leave valuables in their vehicles and to lock their doors before walking away.
