Former Presidential Candidate, 'Law & Order' Star Dies At 73

TENNESSEE (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Fred Thompson, a Republican U.S. senator representing Tennessee and former 'Law & Order' cast member has died, his family said in a statement.

Thompson died in Nashville after a recurrence of lymphoma at 73, according to the statement.

Thompson, a lawyer, alternated between politics and acting much of his adult life. Once regarded as a rising star in the Senate, he retired from the seat when his term expired in January 2003, saying he didn't "have the heart'' for another term.

While in politics, Thompson played a critical role on the Senate Watergate Committee, and took part in the Watergate scandal investigation that eventually led to the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

He announced a bid for president in 2007 but dropped out in 2008 after faring poorly.

Thompson joined the cast of 'Law & Order' in 2002, taking on the role of Manhattan District Attorney Arthur Branch.

His acting credits also include "In the Line of Fire,'' "The Hunt for Red October,'' and "Cape Fear.''
