Goats Spotted Grazing Off Garden State Parkway

NEW JERSEY (CBSNewYork) -- There's a duo of goats on the lam in New Jersey, and officials are trying to herd them back to safety.

"It was kind of funny because people were calling but weren't sure what they were dogs or deer," Veronica Ehrenspeck, of the Associated Humane Societies of NJ, said.

Drivers on the Garden State Parkway have reported several goat sightings on the side of the road -- expressing their excitement and curiosity on social media, CBS2's Elise Finch reported.

"That's just really weird," Taina Brantley, of Sparta, said. "I wonder how they got there you know."

But according to animal control officer Dehlia Grant, catching these hollow-horned mammals isn't so easy.

"You don't want to run and jump to an animal, especially if they don't know you," Grant said. "You want them to trust you."

Recent animal control efforts have helped steer the goat duo away from the parkway.

"I think that's actually pretty good because you don't want to trap them near the highway," George Brantkey, of Sparta, said "There could be an accident they could run out into the road."

After the goats are safely caught, they will most likely be transported to a NJ Associated Humane Societies farm in Tinton Falls, where they will live with other farm animals, like chickens and pigs.

"We do have them contained in a safe area," Ehrenspeck said."Now we need to be contain them a little better to be able to get them."
