Freeport High School Students Pledge To Not Text And Drive

FREEPORT, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- "It Can Wait" is the message being sent to students on Long Island about texting and driving.

Several hundred Freeport High School students have made a pledge to not text and drive -- and for good reason, says village police Chief Miguel Bermudez.

"A person who's distracted, studies have found that they are also driving a car like someone who is drunk," he told WCBS 880 Long Island Bureau Chief Mike Xirinachs.

The message is all too real for Freeport High Principal Linda Carter. Her husband was killed by a distracted driver.

"It only takes a second," she said. "And if you look away for a second, anything can happen.

"If we can bring the awareness to our students and to our community, I think it can save many lives," she said.
