Prosecutors: No Prison Time For Terminally Ill Senator
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Federal prosecutors announced they will not seek prison time for the conviction of former New York State Senator Tom Libous because he is terminally ill.
Libous lost his seat as the Senate's majority leader in July, after being convicted of repeatedly lying to FBI agents in order to cover up a high-paying job arrangement he secured for his son.
Accordig to court papers, Libous has been undergoing treatment for cancer. During his trial in July, Libous was walking stiffly and used a special padded chair while in court.
On Monday, prosecutors recommended Libous be sentenced to house arrest and a fine, according to court papers. Libous' son, Matthew, was sentenced to six months for tax fraud earlier this year.
Prosecutors say Libous lied to agents who were investigating government corruption. The agents were asking how Libous' son Matthew got a $150,000-a-year job with a White Plains law firm.
He is scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 24.
