Child Hospitalized After Falling From 3rd-Story Window In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - A child was rushed to Harlem Hospital Center after falling three stories out of a window in the Bronx.

As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, nobody noticed when 2-year-old Damir Holmes-Carter climbed up to the window and pushed on the screen.

The child plunged 25 feet to the ground outside 451 Brook Ave. in Mott Haven at around 10:35 a.m., Jones reported.

"There's a screen that was just not sturdy enough to be in the window," Raelene Holmes-Andrews, the child's aunt, said. "So his mother stepped out to go to the bathroom and came back heard a loud thud in backyard and he was just laying there."

The child was rushed to Lincoln Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. EMS workers told CBS2's Hazel Sanchez the boy is in good condition.

"I actually play with him all the time," said neighbor Santa Casanova. "He's adorable. He's always smiling, laughing. It's surprising to me this happened."

"I was baffled at first. But then after I ran over here and found out that he was OK I kind of calmed down a bit," Holmes-Andrews said. "This is a miracle. My baby's still kicking."

The grass lawn may have cushioned the child's fall. The boy is recovering at Harlem Hospital with a possible concussion, Jones reported.

Ground floor and second floor apartments in the building have window guards, but the third floor did not, despite the law requiring them in homes where children under 11 reside.

The home has no violations with the Department of Buildings. CBS2 inquired to see if there were any complaints with the Department of Health about lack of window guards, but there was no immediate response.
