H.S. Football Star Charged In Shooting To Play In Game At Yankee Stadium

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A high school football star released on bail in separate attempted murder and gun cases will play in the city title game this weekend at Yankee Stadium.

Rahmel Ashby, 17, is currently a star running back for Grand Street Campus High School in East Willamsburg. However, the nationally-ranked senior running back was charged in an April 2014 shooting that injured three people and was again arrested in October with a handgun.

In both cases he was released on $50,000 bail.

Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson told NY1 his prosecutors had sought to remand him to jail following his October arrest.

City Department of Education rules determine eligibility based on grades and attendance.

Ashby's phone number couldn't be found. A message left for his attorney wasn't immediately returned.

WCBS 880's Stephanie Colombini reports that despite the trouble off-campus, the star player's still scheduled to be on the field when Grand Street Campus high takes on Erasmus Hall.
