Jersey City Police Officers Remembered 10 Years After Tragic Death

JERSEY CITY, N.J (CBSNewYork) -- A special memorial service was held Friday for two officers who died in the line of duty 10 years ago.

Jersey City police officers Shawn Carson and Robert Nguyen were killed when their patrol car plunged off the Lincoln Highway Bridge into the Hackensack River, CBS2 reported.

The officers were called to deliver flares on the Kearny side of the Route 1/9 bridge, but the fog was so thick, they failed to realize the drawbridge was open, 1010 WINS' Samantha Liebman reported. The officers drove off the bridge and fell to their deaths.

"The plunged about 40 feet to their deaths in the emergency services vehicle," Jersey City Police Lieutenant Vincent Glenn said.

The annual ceremony included a wreath-laying and a minute of silence at the time of their deaths.

"The emergency service unit is such a close-knit family that we see officers past and present every year come out," Glenn said.
