2 NYC Postal Workers Charged With Stealing, Trashing Mail In Separate Cases

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Two postal workers in New York City have been arrested for allegedly pocketing gift cards and dumping hundreds of letters in the trash.

According to court papers, James Hayden admitted he spent the last year stealing gift cards from his route in Red Hook, Brooklyn. Hayden was charged with stealing mail, according to the New York Post.

Meanwhile, federal agents said 25-year-old Daniel Darby fessed up to tossing about 1,000 pieces of mail in garbage bags in Ozone Park, Queens, because he was "overwhelmed," by the increase in mail over the holiday season, CBS2 reported.

The bags were discovered two days later.

Darby was charged with unlawfully delaying and destroying the mail.

Both men face up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
