Cops: 100 Left Homeless After Fire In Bridgeport Condo Building

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Bridgeport officials say a fire at a condominium building has left more than 100 people homeless. Authorities say one resident and a firefighter were taken to a hospital.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the four-story, 36-unit building on Charles Street shortly after 6 a.m. Thursday. One resident was rescued from the third floor and taken to a hospital with smoke inhalation. A firefighter also is being treated for minor injuries.

Fire officials say everyone in the building got out safely.

Authorities say the fire began in a basement garage and spread to the first floor. Smoke was reported throughout the building, which appears to be a total loss. Residents said they heard booms.

The cause is under investigation.

The American Red Cross is helping displaced residents with housing needs.

This isn't the first time this year a fire has displaced residents in 2015.

On Dec. 28, a massive fire ripped through a building in Williamsburg, leaving two dead and displacing 10 people. In May,  dozens were displaced after a massive fire burned through a strip of homes in Passaic, New Jersey, with another massive fire burning through a warehouse in New Brunswick in July. Another 40 people were displaced after a fire in Newark in February.
