Five Facts About Tom Coughlin

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Tom Coughlin's 12-year run as Giants coach is over. Here's a look at some of his accomplishments as well as a bit of trivia about the two-time Super Bowl champion head coach.

1. He is tied for 12th place all-time in NFL coaching wins.

With 170 victories on his resume (including his time as coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars), Coughlin is tied with former Broncos and Redskins coach Mike Shanahan. He is just two wins behind another Giants coaching great (and Coughlin's mentor) Bill Parcells, who is 11th all-time with 172 wins.

2. He is the second longest-tenured coach in Giants history.

Coughlin spent a dozen seasons at the helm in New York. The only Giants coach to serve longer was Steve Owen, who coached for 23 years, from 1931-53. (And just like Coughlin, Owens also won two NFL championships.)

3. He is the only NFL head coach Eli Manning has ever played for.

Coughlin and Manning both arrived in New York in 2004. Kurt Warner began that season as the Giants' starting quarterback, but Manning, the first overall draft pick that season, took over midway through the season and has started every game for Big Blue since.

4. He drafted his future son-in-law.

It's certainly not one of the more important facts about Coughlin, but interesting nevertheless: In 2004, the Giants drafted Chris Snee, a guard out of Boston College who just so happened to be the boyfriend of Coughlin's daughter, whom Snee later married. Initially, some wondered if nepotism was at work, but Snee's four Pro Bowl seasons eventually helped silence those accusations.

5. He gives back.

Coughlin started the Tom Coughlin Jay Fund Foundation in 1996 in honor of Jay McGillis, one of his former players at Boston College who developed leukemia. The foundation helps families with children battling cancer. In October, the organization raised $1.5 million at its Champions for Children Gala in New York.
