Police: Off-Duty Officer Shoots Suspect During Armed Robbery In The Bronx

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An off-duty police officer shot and wounded a suspect during an armed robbery in the Bronx, police said.

It happened just before 4 a.m. Monday near East 179th Street and Creston Avenue in the Mount Hope section.

The housing sergeant was walking to a relative's house after his shift when he said three men suddenly surrounded him and stole his his cell phone, 1010 WINS' Glenn Schuck reported.

The officer said one suspect had a gun and another was armed with a knife, Schuck reported.

When the trio discovered the victim's badge, police said one of the suspects said: "Shoot him, shoot him,'' in Spanish.
