Police: Inmate Dead, Officers Injured In NJ Prison Van Crash

MILLVILLE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP)  -- A state prison transport van struck a flatbed truck in southern New Jersey, killing one of the inmates and sending a second inmate and two officers to the hospital with serious injuries, authorities said.

State Police said in a statement that the Bayside State Prison corrections department van hit the truck on Route 55 in Millville around 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

Officials say both inmates were taken to Inspira Medical Center in Vineland. One of the inmates was pronounced dead at the hospital and the other remains hospitalized. The two corrections officers were taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City with serious injuries.

State Police say no one was injured in the truck.

Police said no additional information was immediately available and did not identify the victims as of late Thursday evening.
