Dozens Of Animals Adopted After Being Rescued From North Bergen Hoarder

NORTH BERGEN, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Dozens of animals rescued from a hoarder home in North Bergen have now found a home, due to overwhelming support from the local community.

According to Paul Swibinski, of New Jersey Animal Control and Rescue, a majority of the 49 dogs and five cats rescued from an unheated home in North Bergen last month have been adopted, WCBS 880's Kelly Waldron reported.

Swibinski said one of the four shelters involved with the rescue received more than 600 inquiries about adoption.

"I've never seen any reaction like it, it was really a beautiful thing," Swibinski said.

Bear, a lab-mix puppy, was one of the animals adopted after being brought into a shelter.

"I saw people carrying out the dogs and I saw some of them. Some of them were so young and to think that no one was caring for them, and then some of them just looked really frightened,"  Debbie Provencher, Bear's new owner, told CBS2's Valerie Castro on Feb. 14.

Swibinski said this reaction brings new hope for all of the shelter animals.

"It's not only that all of these animals are being helped and placed in good homes, but more and more people are learning about how easy it is to adopt a pet in New Jersey," Swibinski said.

There are still about a dozen more rescued animals up for adoption at the Second Chance Pet Adoption League in Oak Ridge, the Ramapo Bergen Animal Rescue and Mt. pleasant Animal Shelter.
